Abstract

The long-term diabetic syndrome,as described in the early 1950s by Lundbaek (48), is to a large extent dominated by vascular complications, often in combination with symptoms of neuropathy. Today these late clinical manifestations of widespread vascular involvment, affecting both the large vessels and the capillary system constitute the most serious problem for the patient with diabetes mellitus, threatening his well-being and his life.
