Abstract
Although microscopists have been aware of the existence of cytoplasmic connections between plant cells for a very long time (see Chapters 2 and 14), it is only relatively recently that transport through plasmodesmata has been examined quantitatively. The treatment by Tyree (1970) is now generally taken as the basis for assessment of plasmodesmatal transport and it seems appropriate to introduce this Chapter by reviewing his formulation of the problem.
