Abstract

Experimental research has established in numerous instances that hypoxia of the spinal cord is one of the major facts causing functional disturbances and, finally, irreversible damage to the spinal cord. In this context, hypoxia may, for instance, be caused by circulatory disturbances in the spinal cord itself, by trauma, or by a compressive lesion. To this date, we have applied hyperbaric oxygenation treatment to four cases of compressive lesions of the spinal cord, thus treating hypoxia while at the same time avoiding any hypoxic damage to the spinal cord.
