Abstract
Since 1940 73 patients with suprasellar meningiomas have undergone surgery at the Neurosurgical Clinic of the University of Vienna Medical School. Of these, 54 were female and 19 male. Prior to the introduction of microsurgery in 1970 56 patients had been submitted to conventional surgical procedures. After 1970 surgery for suprasellar meningiomas was invariably done with the help of the surgical microscope. Conventional procedures such as practiced before 1970 were associated with a mortality of 19%, while microsurgical techniques employed since 1970 reduced the mortality rate to 9%, i. e., we only lost 1 patient.
