Summary

The development of behavioural methods of treating anxiety has led to the use of volunteer subjects in analogue studies for investigating appropriate procedures. In this study a group of volunteer subjects with specific phobias is compared with phobic patients and a normal control group. Psychometric results indicate significant differences between the volunteers and patients, although the two groups shared a common disabling symptom. Such differences raise the problem of how analogue studies should be interpreted and indicate the need for caution in the extrapolation of analogue study results to the clinical situation.
