Abstract
Avoidance is a characteristic component of neurotic behaviour. The phobic patient avoiding anxiety-evoking situations, as well as the obsessive patient who seeks to avoid aversive consequences by his ritual behaviour, are both trying to avoid unpleasant events. These patients typically show high resistance to extinction, obviously due to the self-reinforcing system of avoidance behaviour. A great deal of work has been done on this subject in animal studies (e.g. SIDMAN, 1966), but the literature on human avoidance behaviour is limited.
