Abstract

Ototoxicity may be defined as the tendency of certain therapeutic agents and other chemical substances to cause functional impairment and cellular degeneration of the tissues of the inner ear, and especially of the end organs and neurons of the cochlear and vestibular divisions of the VIIIth cranial nerve. Other drugs which may affect hearing or equilibrium by acting primarily on the brainstem nuclei and central pathways of the auditory or vestibular systems may be regarded as neurotoxic, but they can hardly be said to be ototoxic in the strict sense of the word.
