Zusammenfassung

Die Lebenserwartung des Menschen ist in diesem Jahrhundert ständig gestiegen. In den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika leben heute etwa 14 Millionen mehr ältere Menschen als um die Jahrhundertwende. Dies bedeutet einen Zuwachs von 3 auf etwa 10% der Gesamtbevölkerung. Proportional zu diesem Anstieg war eine Zunahme geriatrischer Patienten zu verzeichnen [2, 11, 12].
