Abstract
" The risk of infection remains the crucial issue of internal fixation " (ALLGOEWER, 1971) [3]. The surgical exposure of the fracture zone, necrosis of soft tissue and bone (produced by trauma and operation), as well as foreign body reactions to the implants enhance local growth and spread of infection. In spite of infection a fracture can heal under favourable biomechanical conditions as observed in clinical experience. Thus, the changes in the biomechanical response of the bone to a local infection are of primary interest.
