Egg and Embryo Ultrastructure

  • Chapter
Book cover The Sea Urchin Embryo

Abstract

The study of egg and embryo ultrastructure began 30 years ago when HARVEY and T.F. ANDERSON (19 43) wrote about the spermatozoon and the fertilization membrane. Investigation continued slowly (DAN, 1952; LANSING et al., 1952; MCCULLOCH, 1952) becoming quite intensive in the last 10 years. Of these recently published articles only a few can be listed in an introducing survey, most of them will be found in the text. Extensive work is done by AFZELIUS, 1955–1972; DAN, 1954–1970; MERCER, 1958, 1962; HARRIS, 1961–1968; WOLPERT, 1961, 1963; LÖNNING, 1963, 1967; BAXANDALL, 1964, 1966; KESSEL, 1964–1968; E. ANDERSON, 1966–1970; RUNNSTRÖM, 1966–1969; TILNEY, 1966–1969; INOUE, 1967–1971; MILLONIG, 1967, 1968; W.A. ANDERSON, 1968, 1969; GIBBINS, 1969; LONGO, 1968–1970.
