Emotional factors have been implicated in atherogenesis. Employing electric stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus we previously found functional biliary obstruction associated with hypercholesterolemia in the rat (Gutstein et al., 1969). Using ligation induced biliary tract obstruction, ultrastructural evidence of coronary artery endothelial injury was encountered in the same species (Gutstein and Parl, 19 73).
