Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism at Different Levels of Decreased Cerebral Perfusion Pressure Induced by Raised Intracranial Pressure and Normovolemic Arterial Hypotension
In recent years it has been shown by many investigators (1, 3, 4, 12, 15) that with a decrease in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in hypocapnia the cerebral arterio-venous differences of glucose and oxygen will increase in a compensatory fashion, thus keeping the corresponding cerebral metabolic rates (CMR glucose and CMRO2) constant. The present work was designed to investigate the changes of these important parameters of cerebral oxidative metabolism during a stepwise decrease of cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) induced by raised intracranial pressure and by lowering arterial blood pressure.
