Die Untersuchung der Plazenta läßt Krankheiten bei Mutter und Kind erkennen, was eine frühe Behandlung erlaubt. So können intrauterine Infektionen, die Zygotie bei Mehrlingen, latenter oder manifester Diabetes bei der Mutter, Mißbildungen, Isoimmunisierung und Tumoren festgestellt werden.
