Abstract

Hemolysis is the lossof hemog lobi n from red cells. It leaves the “ghost” of a cell behind. It is a result of physical or chemical injuries or of the action of antibodies or of a hypotonic medium. In these circumstances, the red cell takes up water and swells to the limit dictated by the elasticity of its membrane. When the cell reaches a critical volume (1750/ 0 of normal for discocytes, though the figure may vary greatly in disease) the hemoglobin escapes and hemolysis occurs.
