Abstract
This section describes the biosynthetic control of aldosterone secretion by reference to studies of humoral factors which affect aldosterone production in vivo and in vitro. The model thus built up is concerned with the processes most likely to be involved during sodium depletion. For example, Ang. II and ionic factors are considered in detail whilst the action of ACTH is treated only briefly and serotonin is only mentioned. The biosynthetic summary is then used to examine the control of aldosterone during sodium deficiency with particular attention to the role of ionic factors and the question of whether the renin-angiotensin system is the major regulator of aldosterone secretion in sodium deficiency.
