Abstract
In this chapter we consider certain basic results in the theory of von Neumann algebras. This theory is highly developed and quite extensive; we merely consider those aspects of the theory which will be required for the study of more general kinds of operator algebras in Chapters 8 and 9. The reader interested in pursuing the study of von Neumann algebras should consult the books of Schwartz [2], Kaplansky [2], Naimark [1], Sakai [1], Topping [1], and the comprehensive treatises of Dixmier [2], [3].
