Zusammenfassung
Äthiopien liegt im Nordosten des afrikanischen Kontinents südlich des breiten Trockengürtels, der die noch dem subtropischen Klimabereich zugehörigen Kernräume der arabisch-islamischen Welt Nordafrikas vom tropischen Neger-Afrika trennt. Mit einer Nord-Süd- Erstreckung zwischen rund 18° und weniger als 4° Nord befindet sich Äthiopien mit dem größten Teil seiner Fläche in der gleichen Breitenzone wie der westlich anschließende Sudan, in dem sich sowohl in der Naturlandschaft wie auch in der Kulturlandschaft ein mannigfaltig gestufter Wandel vom extremen Trockengebiet zum tropischen Feuchtwald, vom Lebensraum der Nomaden zu dem der afrikanischen Waldbauern vollzieht. Trotz einiger vergleichbarer Strukturen und auch hier vorhandener Gegensätze zwischen Nord und Süd läßt sich Äthiopien, das mit einer Fläche von rund 1,2 Mill. km2 und mit wohl inzwischen weit mehr als 20 Mill. Einwohnern zu den größten und volksreichsten Staaten Afrikas zählt, jedoch weder auf Grund seiner Landesnatur noch auf Grund seiner kulturgeschichtlichen Stellung und Eigenart als Glied des Sudans ansehen, es nimmt vielmehr im gesamtafrikanischen Rahmen auch in der Gegenwart eine sehr ausgeprägte Sonderstellung ein, für deren Herausbildung sowohl die Lage zu den benachbarten Großräumen wie auch eine Reihe von Eigenarten der natürlichen Ausstattung sicher eine recht große Bedeutung gehabt haben.
