Zusammenfassung

Jedermann erinnert sich noch lebhaft daran, welches Staunen und. welche Bewunderung vor etwa 6 Jahren die Nachricht bei Aerzten und Laien gleicherweise hervorrief, daß es dem französischen Chirurgen Carrel gelungen sei, völlig vom Organismus abgetrennte Organe und Extremitäten wieder einzuheilen und mit wenigstens temporärem Erfolg selbst auf andere Individuen zu übertragen. Glaubte man doch am Anfang einer neuen Entwicklungsperiode der Chirurgie zu stehen, nahm man doch vielfach an, daß es nur noch eine Frage kurzer Zeit sei, bis es gelingen würde, unheilbar erkrankte Organe, verloren gegangene Extremitäten zu ersetzen.
