Abstract
The shift of focus from gram-positive to gram-negative bacteria as agents of nosocomial disease has led to a surge of interest in gram-negative rods that were once assumed to be nonpathogenic, such as species of the genera Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, Flavobacterium, Actinobacter, and, in particular, Serratia. Between 1894 and 1960, approximately 30 papers on Serratia infections appeared in the world literature, while in the past 10 years, 75 papers have covered the subject—not counting those that primarily dealt with in-vitro sensitivities of this organism.
