Part of the book series: Handbook of Sensory Physiology ((1729,volume 3 / 1))

Abstract

The so-called arterial chemoreceptors are located in the vicinity of each carotid bifurcation (carotid body) and the roots of the main thoracic arteries (aortic bodies) as depicted in Figs. 1 and 2. The carotid body is supplied by branches of the occipital and ascending pharyngeal arteries. The aortic bodies are nourished by small branches from the neighbouring systemic vessels (Coleridge, Coleridge and Howe 1966, 1967, 1970).
