Part of the book series: Progress in Molecular and Subcellular Biology ((PMSB,volume 2))

Abstract

Paul Ehrlich (1913) observed, first, the occurrence of “relapsing crops” of parasites in animals under experimental chemotherapy, i.e. of strains which had developed resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. This discovery was subsequently forgotten until the advent of antibacterial chemotherapy and the emergence of bacterial strains which were resistant either to sulfonamides or to antibiotics.
