Multipliers for Topological Linear Spaces of Functions and Measures

We now wish to shift our attention away from the study of multipliers for Banach algebras and begin a discussion of multipliers for topological linear spaces. In this chapter we shall study a variety of topological linear spaces of functions and measures for which a characterization of the multipliers is relatively accessible. In addition to its intrinsic interest we hope that this material will illustrate some of the differences between the study of multipliers for commutative Banach algebras and for topological linear spaces. A general treatment of the important topic of multipliers for the L p -spaces will be delayed until a subsequent chapter.
