Mol.-Gew. = 40,005. Im Handel als festes Ätznatron und in wäßriger Lösung als Natronlauge (38 bis 40 °Bé). Das Ätznatron ist stark hygroskopisch und nimmt begierig Kohlendioxyd aus der Luft auf (Karbonatbildung).
