Abstract

We measured the e.m.f.’s of cells of Na-NH3 solutions vs Na-Hg amalgams to determine the activity (chemical potential) as a function of the concentration of metal in liquid ammonia and of temperature. We paid particular attention to the region of phase separation. From these data we obtained values of the critical exponent δ. Using the known value of β(= 0.50) for these solutions and scaling, we obtained an estimate for α and γ as well. The results are α = 0.05, γ = 1.0, δ =2.9. Clearly, liquid conductors behave more like classical fluids than do nonconductors.
