Abstract
Current investigations of the biosynthesis of connective tissue proteoglycans encompass a number of diverse aspects of this area, some of which are common to the study of biosynthetic processes in general, while others represent problems which are unique to the connective tissues. The scope of the field ranges from studies of individual enzyme reactions in cell-free systems to investigations of proteoglycan metabolism in the intact tissue or the whole animal under the influence of various metabolic regulators. In the limited space of this presentation, it is clearly impossible to cover all of these areas even in a superficial fashion. Emphasis will therefore be placed primarily on some recent developments in the study of individual enzymes participating in polysaccharide biosynthesis, especially the chain-initiating xylosyltransferase and other glycosyltransferases involved in the early stages of polysaccharide chain formation.
