Thirst and Salt Appetite in Experimental Renal Hypertension of Rats

  • Chapter
Control Mechanisms of Drinking

Abstract

Partial constriction of one renal artery of the rat without touching the contralateral kidney induces sodium retention for a period of two to three weeks (Möhring, Näumann, Möhring, Philippi, and Gross, 1971). Subsequently, sodium balance is re-established. However, in those animals in which blood pressure exceeds a critical level, salt and water loss occur (Gross, Dauda, Kazda, Kyncl, Möhring, and Orth, 1972; Möhring et al. 1971); the activity of the renin-angiotensin system is further elevated, plasma aldosterone production is markedly stimulated, and malignant nephrosclerosis of the contralateral kidney may be found (Dauda, Möhring, Hofbauer, Homsy, Miksche, Orth, and Gross, 1973; Möhring et al. 1971; Möhring, Dauda, Haack, Hofbauer, Homsy, Näuman, Orth, and Gross, 1972; Vecsei and Monter, 1973).
