Abstract

In the last chapter we considered the noninteracting electron gas and electrons in a periodic potential. In both cases the Hamiltonian could be split into a sum of one-particle operators. We now want to improve on this approximation by taking Coulomb interaction into account. Parts of this interaction were indeed already included in the Hamiltonian (1.32), but we lost important features of it in making the approximations leading to the one-electron model.
