Abstract

A geoelectric model for the Earth’s crust and upper mantle may be suggested as follows:

  1. 1.

Highly conducting surface layer: oceans, seas, sedimentary basins. Thickness is zero to 10–20 km, specific resistivity 0.2–500 ohmm, total longitudinal conductivity 0–3.104 mho.

  2. 2.

Lithosphere, bounded from below by the asthenosphere. The bulk of lithospheric rocks have a high resistivity of 103 ohmm and higher. Within the lithosphere, there are conductive zones of various scale among which the largest are local narrow electrical conductivity anomalies and conductive layres. (Discrimination between these two is conditional, both being conventionally called electrical conductivity anomalies).
