Abstract
Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is one of the most important cereals in the world. It ranks in the fourth place after wheat, rice and maize. Until 1978 there was a rapid increase in its production in the world, followed by a slight decrease and now there is an annual production of nearly 160 million tons. At present the area under cultivation is about 80 million hectares (Table 1).
