Abstract
Betula, the birch, is an important and diverse deciduous tree genus belonging to the family Betulaceae. It is widely distributed in the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere in the form of almost 40 species that vary in size from small shrubs to some of the largest deciduous forest trees. Distinct species can be found in North America, Europe and Asia (Table 1) and some of these (B. papyrifera, B. pendula, and B. platyphylla) appear to fill similar ecological niches on the separate continents and have many superficially similar characteristics.
