Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 12))

Abstract

Strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch.) is an octoploid species 2n = 56, which does not occur in natural conditions. This hybrid species developed after crosses between Fragaria chiloensis (L.) Duch. and Fragaria virginiana Duch., which was for the first time described by Duchesne in 1766 and later confirmed in numerous papers (Otterbacher and Skirvin 1978)
