A Moving Mesh Integro Variational Formulation Applied to Hydraulic Fracturing

An accurate prediction of the geometry of hydraulically induced fractures is required to control their propagation. Classical techniques based on finite elements are not adapted to the problem due to the large computational requirements and to the remeshing process, while classical boundary integrals involve the treatment of singularities. An integro-variational technique based on a formulation first proposed by Bonnemay1 is used here to solve the LEFM problem, with its main advantages residing in the easy implementation within existing finite element codes, and the regular kernels involved.
