Abstract

Our purpose in organizing this seminar was threefold:

  1. 1.

    to evaluate the instrument of cost-benefit analysis from a broader perspective, namely not only from a methodological or technical point of view but also embedded in an environmental and social context;

  2. 2.

    to apply that methodology to the case of a new drug (Nitroderm TTS) which had been studied extensively and to the various social and economic conditions in six different countries, and to present data; and

  3. 3.

    to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue between policy-makers, economists, sociologists, physicians, and drug manufacturers, in critically reviewing the data presented at the symposium.
