Zusammenfassung
Licht ist für die Pflanze nicht nur eine Quelle für Energie (→Kapitel 4), sondern auch für Information zur Steuerung von Stoffwechsel und Entwicklung. Obwohl hierbei nicht nur morphologische, sondern auch zahllose physiologische und metabolische Prozesse beteiligt sind, nennt man dieses Phänomen aus Traditionsgründen Photomorphogenese. Hierzu zählt z.B. auch der Phototropismus, der jedoch im Zusammenhang mit der Bewegungsphysiologie (Kapitel 16) behandelt wird. Photomorphogenetische Reaktionen der Pflanze setzen Photoreceptoren voraus, welche die wirksame Strahlung absorbieren und die so gewonnene Information in eine biochemische Signalkette einspeisen, an deren Ende eine Photomorphose (morphologische oder biochemische Antwort, z. B. Wachstumsänderung) steht. Das bekannteste Photoreceptorpigment ist das Phytochrom. Daneben gibt es bei höheren Pflanzen mindestens ein Blau/UV-empfindliches Photomorphogenese-pigment, dessen chemische Identität noch nicht endgültig geklärt ist („Cryptochrom“). Die vom angeregten Photoreceptorpigment ausgelöste Primärreaktion und die anschließende Signalkette konnte bisher in keinem Fall aufgeklärt werden. Zumindest bei vielen phytochromgesteuerten Entwicklungsprozessen ist jedoch in den letzten Jahren gezeigt worden, daß die Signaltransduction, wie schon lange vermutet, über eine Aktivierung bzw. Inaktivierung von bestimmten Genen verläuft.
