Abstract
Troll (1959) and other authors discuss the resemblance between wood and reinforced concrete. Figure 86 shows the underlying principle. Whereas reinforcing steel and cellulose are characterized by high tensile strength, concrete and lignin resist compression but cannot bear much tension.
