Abstract

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy induces in the offspring a wide spectrum of adverse effects, the extreme consequence of which is the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), characterized by growth deficiency, altered morphogenesis, and central nervous system dysfunctions (Jones and Smith 1973). The incidence of FAS is estimated to be 1.9 per 1000 live births, and in Western societies alcohol consumption during pregnancy is considered to be the most prevalent cause of preventable mental retardation (Abel and Sokol 1987). Although in 20 years of basic and clinical research a wealth of information has been accumulated, there is a need for further definition and characterization of the prenatal effects of alcohol on the developing organism.
