Abstract
Classically, the final manifestations of abnormal development mentioned in the literature are embryonic/fetal/neonatal death, malformations, growth retardations, and functional disorders. It is, however, reasonable to assume that chemically induced as well as “spontaneous” disturbances of embryonic and fetal development most often result in a continuum of defects from major malformations to minor functional defects, rather than any of the above mentioned defects as clear cut entities. For obvious resons, the focus since the thalidomide catastrophy in the early sixties has been on the risk for morphological malformations.
