Abstract

Traditionally, the genetics of psychiatric disorders consisted of the results of twin, adoption, and family studies. The outcome of such studies in bipolar illness consists of evidence that a genetic component of liability is operating, as well as definitions of the inherited phenotype, and morbid risk estimates. What has not come out of these studies is subdivson of the observed illness into distinct genetic subclasses, or an inherited pathophysiology. Recent progress in genetic linkage studies of this disorder, however, leads one to expect that susceptibility mutations and molecular diagnostic subclasses will soon be discovered.

This manuscript includes updated materials from Gershon ES (in press) Recent developments in genetics of bipolar illness. In: Gessa GL, Fratta L, Serra G (eds) Depression: neurobiology, pharmacology and clinic: Proceedings of the 8th Sardinian Conference on Neuroscience, Raven, New York.
