Abstract

In all the cases illustrated in this chapter and in the section on septic arthritis in Chap. 3, bacteriological proof of the infection was obtained either from blood culture, culture from surgical exploration or the discovery of “sterile” pus at surgery. The only exceptions to this are certain cases of spinal abnormalities in which there is controversy about the condition and in which no surgical exploration was undertaken. The same applies to the cases of sacro-ileitis.
