Abstract

This chapter, covering medical applications, consists of three sections: overview, hollow fiber application and dental application. The first section is an overview of the wide range of utilizations of macromolecules with medical devices, including artficial organs and various other hospital products. The reasons why macromolecules are used so widely with medical devices and sometimes drugs are discussed, together with recent progress with polymeric biomaterials with regards to their application to medical devices. Such medical devices, in which macromolecules play such a key role, and the impact of new medical technology born from those medical devices on society are identified. The second section deals with hollow fiber applications, including details of recent developments in blood purification devices using hollow fiber membranes made from macromolecules. This section has been prepared from the contribution of Dr. Sueoka. The third section emphasizes the impact of the successful development of polymeric adhesives on dental materials and dentistry. This section has been prepared from the contribution of Dr.J. Yamauchi. The authors, Dr. Sakurada and Dr. Takakura, had been working together with Dr. Sueoka and Dr. Yamauchi in the Medical Products Division of Kuraray Co., Ltd., which specialises in medical applications of hollow fiber membranes and dental material.
