Abstract

Age is a major source of variation in drug response. Social, medical, and physiologic heterogeneity intertwine to complicate geriatric pharmacotherapy (Williams 1987). Inappropriate and excessive use of medication may be the most significant treatable health problem in the elderly. The elderly are especially sensitive to antipsychotics, which are disproportionately prescribed to them (Beers and Ouslander 1989). Antipsychotic side effects and adverse reactions are intensified and protean in an older population, ranging from disabling to deadly. It is essential, therefore, that the indications for their use be clear, guided by knowledge of both age-related and individual determinants of drug clearance and action, and associated with prospective and frequent assessment for adverse effects Pollock and Mulsant 1995). The use of antipsychotics in an older population has lately been tempered by increased awareness of adverse consequences, neurochemistry, limited efficacy, and governmental regulation.
