Abstract
CMC technology addresses two key issues in distance education: information transfer and interaction. In this paper we will review some of the potentialities and problems arisen by the use of this technology, as well as how it affects the current distance education framework both from the educational and organizational point of view. The new potential of CMC to support collaborative learning at a distance is illustrated through examples. Metaphors and models for group interaction and coordination are reviewed and main requirements for the supporting software are pointed out.
