Abstract

Cocaine has been used by humankind for centuries. The United States is currently experiencing its second epidemic of cocaine use; the first occurred in the late nineteenth through the early twentieth century and the second started in the 1970s. The most recent surge of cocaine use has been facilitated by several factors. These include an increased availability and drop in the price of cocaine, the development of “crack,” or a free base of the drug, and an increase in use via routes that enable rapid brain uptake of cocaine, i.e., through intravenous or smoked routes. Compared to intranasal use, smoking cocaine provides a more rapid brain uptake of the drug followed by a more rapid decrement in blood levels (FISCHMAN 1987). This appears to lead to rapid, repeated cocaine administration and may facilitate quicker development of cocaine dependence (JOHANSON and FISCHMAN 1989).
