Abstract

Using mammography, radiologists often identify nonpalpable lesions that are interpreted as having a very low probability of malignancy. This chapter covers the several approaches, especially periodic mammographic surveillance, to subsequent management of these lesions. Follow-up mammography examinations usually are recommended as an alternative to open surgical biopsy or percutaneous imaging-guided tissue diagnosis (via aspiration cytology or core biopsy), in order to avert the morbidity and substantial cost of these more invasive procedures (Homer 1981; Moskowitz 1983; Homer 1987; Wolfe et al. 1987; Hall et al. 1988; Moskowitz 1988; Moskowitz 1989; Brenner and Sickles 1989; Hall 1990; Adler and Helvie 1990; Helvie et al. 1991; Sickles 1991a; Varas et al. 1992; Sickles and Parker 1993).
