Summary

We have determined the complete DNA sequence of budding yeast Hansenula wingei mitochondrial genome. The sequence data clearly reveal characteristics uniquely intermediary between those of yeasts and those of filamentous fungi. Nevertheless, phylogenetic analysis indicates that H. wingei is closely related to the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. These results suggest that drastic reorganization occurred in yeast mitochondrial genomes during evolution.
