Energy Efficiency Improvements in Electric Motors and Drives

Abstract

In the context of low (medium) power drives, various types of synchronous motors are analysed, with reference to the given performance in terms of efficiency. Mainly, P.M. excited machines are considered, with reference to adoption of both rare-earth and ferrite magnets, for different kinds of motor construction. Their performance is compared to that obtainable by induction motors, also depending on frame size. In addition, this comparison is extended to the synchronous reluctance motor, as an emerging solution in the field. Last, some applicative considerations are given aiming to find-out the most suited solution to each field.
