Abstract

Despite the decline of severe traffic accidents in the emergency service the proportion of brain injuries and polytraumata has not decreased. The reason for this lies in the increase in accidents in the household and during leisure activities. While in the past many of these patients died immediately at the place of accident or during transport, today more patients reach the clinic due to earlier initiation and higher quality of medical care in the emergency service. Today the standard of preclinical management in Germany includes a medical physician specially qualified in emergency medicine.
