Abstract
The following exposition introduces a proposal for a multimedia based working environment which has been developed within a compound research project SEBID (Simultaneous Engineering Broadband Integrated Development). The concept developed in SEBID covers manyfold facilities of broadband communication technology, delivering new and powerful capabilities of information processing for the product development process. Video conferencing, distributed cooperative modelling and hypermedia techniques are noval tools for the designer enabling him to understand his product development task as a group task which can be concurrently performed in terms of distributed subtasks. Different aspects of the proposed working environment are discussed. The exposition concludes with an outlook on further development work within the project SEBID2 which also is currently running in Berlin. Main task of this project is the integration of commercial CAD systems CADDS5, CATIA V4 and ProEngineer with distributed product data management and hypermedia systems into a mutual system environment for distributed cooperative work.
