Abstract

The synthesis of normal quantities of thyroid hormones containing iodine in the molecules depends on the availability of adequate quantities of exogenous iodine. Iodine participates not only in an essential substrate for thyroid hormone biosynthesis, but also in many pharmacological actions. Therefore, the effect of iodine on the thyroid is a combination of the effects of pharmacological action and the effects of iodine as a substrate for thyroid hormone.
