Abstract

Dynamics of lattice-structural changes of Frenkel-pair formation upon band-gap excitation in alkali halides is discussed based on the recent femtosecond spectroscopic studies. It is shown that the relaxation process of electron-hole (e-h) pairs consists of the two distinct stages with different nature. The first stage is the relaxation of an interacting pair an electron and the relaxing hole which is under way of its relaxation towards the stable two-center type configuration. In this stage, Frenkel pairs are formed through the dynamical instability, and the self-trapped exciton (STE) with the on-center configuration is also formed. The second stage is essentially the off-center relaxation of the on-center STE into the F-H pairs and the off-center STE’s. Generality of the process is discussed based on the classification of alkali halide crystals into three classes.
